Statement on USDOT’s Nationwide Bridge Formula Program By Tolling Industry Association

WASHINGTON, DC –The International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association (IBTTA), the worldwide association representing toll facility owners and operators and the businesses that serve them, released the following statement on the Federal Highway Administration’s announcement today of the $26.5 billion Nationwide Bridge Formula Program aimed to repair, improve, and construct bridges both on and off the federal-aid highway system.

“IBTTA applauds the U.S. Department of Transportation for taking prompt action to begin the largest federal investment ever in our nation’s bridges through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The nation’s bridges are essential to America’s economic vitality and quality of life and help promote the mobility and access to opportunity that are hallmarks of the U.S. transportation system,” said Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti, IBTTA President and Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

States will have challenging decisions on how to maximize the benefits of the federal funding available. Tolling and road pricing are an important component of wise transportation investment plans that augment scarce federal and state resources to address our extensive infrastructure needs,” said Pat Jones, Executive Director & CEO of IBTTA. “IBTTA is ready to support the states in maximizing the benefits of expanded toll financing opportunities under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.”

According to the FHWA, the National Bridge program represents the largest investment ever made in fixing bridges – dedicating $26.5 billion to states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico over the five years of the law and $825 million for tribal bridges. The total amount that will be available to states, D.C. and Puerto Rico in Fiscal Year 2022 is $5.3 billion along with $165 million for tribal communities.
