A Defining Moment for Tolling at IBTTA's 2020 Technology Summit

When you attend IBTTA’s 2020 Technology Summit, April 2-4, in San Diego, CA, you’ll get more than just the latest update on the avalanche of emerging technologies and business practices reshaping the transportation sector.
You’ll be a part of a defining moment for the tolling and user financing community that is rapidly emerging as the cornerstone for the sector’s success.
IBTTA President Samuel Johnson’s theme for this year has everything to do with the “convergence of transformative technologies” sweeping the industry, the “clear recognition of the need for a more sustainable financial model to fund transportation needs”, and the challenges involved in maximizing that opportunity. It’s hard to imagine a better place than IBTTA’s Technology Summit, or a better location than San Diego, to bring all of those elements together.
A Bold New Vision
It’s the dawn of a new decade, with players from outside transportation entering the tolling space and showing up on the IBTTA main stage. The Technology Summit kicks off on Friday morning, April 3 with a bold new vision for transportation, driven by multiple, converging trends like Mobility as a Service (MaaS), shared mobility, micro-transit, and 5G.
This new era of transportation provides increased opportunities to manage transportation demand and will change the way customers utilize transportation services. At the same time, governments are seriously considering introducing urban congestion pricing, road usage charging/vehicle miles traveled, changing land use requirements and other activities that will change the way we get around. These advancements require vision for this new era of transportation and thoughtful consideration of the tolling industry’s role in this closer-knit, fully integrated transportation fabric.
The opening sessions will be a lightning tour of new business strategies and practical, forward-looking plans, delivered by separate panels of tolling industry visionaries and technology industry titans. They’ll be followed by four breakout sessions on some of the biggest ideas in roadside and back office technology—from the coming convergence between RUC/VMT and tolling, to the rapid growth and evolution of priced managed lanes, to the next generation of crucial back office systems on which every tech-enabled tolling agency depends.
The conference will continue through the array of topics at the top of the industry’s technology agenda—from cybersecurity and drones, to congestion pricing and more streamlined lane infrastructure, to innovative procurement and organizational strategies. It’ll also see the return of IBTTA’s popular Innovation Tech Talks, offering a rapid succession of current topics in bite-sized pieces of learning.
The IBTTA Foundation Brings You…The Olympics
With regular sessions, technical tours, and evening events running from dawn to dusk, the Technology Summit in San Diego offers something for everyone. You’ll enjoy a dizzying array of sessions, including a young professionals’ day, a breakfast for women in tolling, the ever-popular Tolling 101 workshop for new arrivals in the industry, and a CTO roundtable.
And who knew that attending a conference in San Diego would be your moment to shine at the 2nd Annual Backyard Olympics or attend an invigorating Casino Night, both organized in support of the IBTTA Foundation Scholarship Fund? The Foundation is pulling out all the stops to pay for five scholarships this year, and the two events in San Diego are your opportunity to connect with colleagues old and new, engage in some friendly competition, win some great prizes, and have fun in a relaxed, professional setting. Details and sponsorship info are the conference website.
The history of this event is the other reason to treat it as your gateway to the future: In past years, the Technology Summit has brought together an audience of senior decision-makers from many of the smartest, most innovative tolling agencies, vendors and integrators on the planet. With more than 800 attendees expected, the 2020 Summit will be the place where business is conducted, and an essential moment to network with industry colleagues and elevate your brand as a toll industry leader.
