Elizabeth River Crossings (ERC) OpCo, LLC, the IBTTA member responsible for Virginia’s new Midtown Tunnel between the cities of Norfolk and Portsmouth, has earned top honors from Road & Bridges magazine as the #1 Road Project in North America for 2014.

The project includes all-electronic tolling with variable rates for EZ-Pass and pay-by-plate customers, and for peak and non-peak hours.

ERC and its design-build partner, SKW Constructors, impressed the magazine’s reviewers with their commitment to quality construction and their “successful implementation of the project’s more challenging and complex elements, such as coordinating the work zone approaches on the Portsmouth and Norfolk sides of the existing Midtown Tunnel with only minimal disruptions to traffic,” states a Road & Bridges release.

“Earning the top spot among road projects is a huge honor,” said ERC CEO Greg Woodsmall. “We are improving the driving experience between Norfolk and Portsmouth and investing in our infrastructure so that it continues to serve our communities for decades to come.”

ERC is the Virginia Department of Transportation’s private partner for project design, construction, finance, operations, and maintenance.
