- 2016 Building Bridges At Fort Adams
IBTTA Foundation Annual Service Project
Newport, Rhode Island
Fort Adams, named after President John Adams, is a former United States Army post established on July 4, 1799. Today, the Fort is a part of the beautiful Fort Adams State Park located in Newport, Rhode Island. The majority of the Fort and state park is in good condition and used for a variety of purposes that serve the community, including hosting the Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals. Unfortunately, some parts have been kept from public access for over 60 years due to deteriorating conditions and in need of extensive funding and rehabilitative work and attention in order to make it accessible to the public. This year, IBTTA, along with over 200 volunteers, including the local Boys and Girls Club and the James L. Maher Center, a group that works to integrate individuals with developmental disabilities into the workforce, contributed to the restoration of the fort by constructing two bridges across the original moat of the Fort, building staircases, and carrying out an assortment of smaller projects throughout the grounds.
