With 2017 President Emanuela Stocchi focusing her year at IBTTA’s helm on International Mobility Connections, the association’s International Summit of Rome October 15-17 is shaping up as a unique opportunity to take the pulse of a booming global industry.
“Our conference host, AISCAT (the Italian Association of Toll Motorways and Tunnels Operators), is a renowned industry leader, and our planning committee volunteers have pulled together a fabulous program that captures a dynamic, tech-enabled global industry,” says IBTTA Executive Director and CEO Patrick Jones. “It’s hard to imagine a better opportunity for tolling executives from around the world to share their knowledge, ideas, and best practices.”
A Global Lens on User Financing
The Summit will open with an overview of the “complex, interconnected and vital highway network” through which 27 toll concessionaires keep people and goods in motion across Italy. “The characteristics of the system, due to the geographical diversity, the regulatory context and the number of involved stakeholders, require specific solutions and tailored procedures to manage daily operations and to plan the investments aimed at keeping a high level of effectiveness and safety for our customers,” the conference program states.
A session on global trends will bring together insights on key performance indicators in Greece, road tech support in Spain, mobility systems in China, IT security and data protection in South Africa, and industry trends in the United States. “A tolling agency that wanted this range of business intelligence would spend weeks gathering data and reaching out to international colleagues and contacts,” said Emanuela Stocchi, President, IBTTA and Director of International Affairs for AISCAT (Associazione Italiana Società Concessionarie Autostrade e Trafori), the Italian Association of Toll Highways Concessionaires Companies. “This session brings it all together in 90 minutes and then you have the opportunity to follow up with each of the panelists.”
The Summit also features panels on next-generation options like Mobility as a Service (MaaS) and Internet of Things applications, safety and incident management, advanced and emerging technology solutions, cyber and physical security, and responding to environmental challenges like climate change and air quality.
A Wider Professional Network
Any IBTTA conference is an opportunity to share knowledge and learn from a concentrated, welcoming group of professional colleagues. In Rome, that dynamic will play out across an even more diverse and widely-travelled group of participants.
The conversations will get started early on the morning of Sunday, October 15 for participants who sign up for an optional technical tour of Autostrade Per L’Italia’s multimedia info center. As always, receptions and breaks will take place in an exhibition hall that is widely recognized as a venue for agencies to discuss their emerging business needs with some of the most qualified industry vendors anywhere.
On the Monday evening, you’ll get to attend a spectacular event at the famed Palazzo Colonna, one of Rome’s oldest and largest private palaces, featuring operatic performances by the Choir Petrassi and the Choir Claudio Casini, University of Tor Vergata.
“There are many challenges that the toll industry has to face worldwide: efficiencies in maintaining existing assets, security in times of global unrest (with particular attention to bridges and tunnels), and the decarbonization of transport for improved mobility and quality of life for our customers,” said Stocchi. “That makes the International Summit of Rome exactly the right place “to get a broad sense of new thinking that is currently being implemented, or is part of future strategic planning.”
