495 Express Lanes in Virginia Mark 100 Million Vehicle Miles and More Than One Million Unique Customers

You could travel from the earth to the sun and back, with a few million miles to spare.

You could cover the entire length of the Great Wall of China—a mere 7,593 times, at 13,171 miles per trip.

Or you could add up all the vehicle miles travelled on Virginia’s 495 Express Lanes since the facility opened in November 2012 and come up with 100 million miles, the signature achievement that Transurban and the Virginia Department of Transportation announced last week.

“The top three reasons customers take the 495 Express Lanes are to reach a destination on time, to avoid congestion on the regular Beltway lanes, or because they want a reliable trip,” reports Transurban, based on a 2013 online survey of Greater Washington-area drivers.

The 495 Express Lanes have welcomed 1.1 million unique customers since they opened. On the facility’s busiest day, December 13, 2013, customers took 48,489 trips.
