The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) announced a landmark amount of funding for the nation’s bridges today. The Bridge Replacement, Rehabilitation, Preservation, Protection, and Construction Program (Bridge Formula Program for short) dedicates more than $27 billion to fixing bridges across the U.S. over the next five years.
IBTTA applauded the news in a statement this morning. “The nation’s bridges are essential to America’s economic vitality and quality of life and help promote the mobility and access to opportunity that are hallmarks of the U.S. transportation system,” said Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti, IBTTA President and Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
The organization continued, noting that while the DOT’s multibillion-dollar investment will certainly have an impact, tolling and road pricing can “augment scarce federal and state resources to address our extensive infrastructure needs.”
